Confidentiality

I am pleased that you have decided to consider counseling.  There are several things I want you to be clear on before we begin discussing your reason for coming.   Personal issues are sometimes very difficult to talk about.  That is why confidentiality is extremely important to you and me.  I take every precaution in protecting the confidentiality of your visit with me and I hope that you will do the same.

Limitations of Confidentiality:

I will not discuss your situation with anyone, unless you give me written permission to do so, except for reasons cited below.  There are three limitations to confidentiality that are beyond your control:

1.      The counselor learns about child abuse or abuse of disabled adults

2.      If, in the counselor’s judgment, the client is dangerous to himself/herself or others (suicidal or homicidal)

3.      The counselor is required to present records and/or appear to comply with a court order.

This provides a safe and secure opportunity for you to discuss personal issues with me.

Using a third party payer (insurance) further erodes confidentiality because of their demand for records.  You can read a paper I have written on this subject: Erosion of Confidentiality
