Confidentiality is the corner stone of trust between the counselor and the client. It is my duty as the counselor not to disclose any information that I hear in sessions. You as the client can waive this standard of conduct by giving permission in writing. Permission in writing is commonly given to insurance companies. I do not accept third party payments. I do not disclose client confidences to anyone except as mandated by law. I am also required to have a licensed professional counselor (LPC) as my supervisor and that supervisor’s job is to help me to give you the best counseling that I can. It is not necessary for my supervisor to know your identity details.
I do have a duty as a mandated reporter to break confidentiality in cases of abuse, neglect, abandonment, and exploitation of children, the mentally challenged and persons over sixty years of age.
I also have a duty to warn in regards to suicide, threats of danger to others, and instances of HIV positive relationships with unknowing participants. In all cases I will do my best to have you the client handle the disclosure(s) in a timely and appropriate manner.
